Bachelor's Degree in Dental Hygiene
The Bachelor Degree in Dental Hygiene is a three years programme that offers theoretical lessons, supervised practical lessons and laboratories that exploit 3D technology for educational purposes as well as clinical internship carried out in dental clinics. The first year approaches basic medical sciences, with the aim of providing students with basic and preparatory training for the specialist insights characterizing the second and third year of the course. In fact, the following years allow students to develop analytic, conceptual and specific skills relating to care, clinical and scientific reasoning and communication skills with the patient. The Dental hygienists’ competence lies in the integration of theoretical studies and practical training. A distinctive element of the academic path is certainly the traineeship in the laboratories where students have the opportunity to learn the practical techniques that will then characterise the work of the hygienist. Students also begin to familiarise, with the equipment (scaler handpiece, probe, scaler, curette, etc.) used for carrying out the main activities such as: plaque removal, oral cleaning, teeth cleaning, gingivitis, etc., with the aim of refining their skills, Dental hygienists are expected to safeguard the interests of the patient through patient participation and through collaboration with other occupational groups. Professional practice shall be based on equality and respect for the integrity and rights of the individual in the light of ethical considerations and legislation, and on preserving the patient’s autonomy and right to co-determination. All patient contact shall be based on empathy, responsibility and professional knowledge.

On completion of the study programme students will be able to provide services to people of all ages – both those without disabilities and those with various functional impairments. The programme should enable students to develop the ability to convert knowledge and insight into solutions that can be applied with a focus on the awareness of responsibility, ethical judgement and professional integrity. The study programme provide a foundation for acquiring the knowledge that contributes to the understanding and development of multicultural skills, respect, tolerance and relationship building. Competence in the fields of IT and the collection of data/relevant sources is critical for learning, thus students will gain an insight into the fundamental rules for citations and use of sources, as well as the definitions of plagiarism and cheating as applied to students’ work. Students must be able to document, quality assure and evaluate their own work. Students will be given adequate time and opportunity to develop professional confidence and professional identity. These fundamental qualities are required for building relationships and for cooperating across relevant professions in the practice of the profession. A primary goal is for students to develop an open and reflective view on how their role and the dental hygienist profession can be performed and further developed. At the end of the educational process in dental hygiene, the students will have acquired knowledge, ability and aptitude to satisfy expectations in care services. To achieve this goal, the student must show the ability to determine a programme in health education which comprises adequate motivation for self-control in periodic visits, domestic and personal hygiene, both oral and nutritional. The dental hygienist must be able to:
evaluate results of personal and professional oral hygiene with objective checks according to OHI indices, of plaque presence, CPITN etc.
complete oral hygiene treatments on subjects of pediatric age, adults and geriatric age.
compile clinical files
perform polishing and dental restoration, manual removal of plaque, removal of plaque with ultrasound, apply dental sealants
effect surgical cleaning, scaling and root planning
know the principles of sterilisation, and prevention of cross infections also on high-risk patients
have frequented on rotation the departments of oral surgery, pedodontics, periodontology, orthodontics, prosthetics, and restorative orthodontics
manage security on place of work and collaborate in risk assessment of measures to be implemented for prevention and protection
contribute in a constructive manner in the development of the profession and the structures of health origanisations
be responsible and professional whilst understanding ethical problems in relation to users and in regard to inter-disciplinary collaboration with other professionals in the health sector
manage his/her own personal professional development in line with technological, scientific, and social progress through the awareness of his/her own potential for career development.
Students must possess an EQF/MQF level 5 achieved after at least 12 years of previous schooling, and issued by an accredited Institution in the Country where the qualification was achieved or the equivalent in any area deemed relevant by PI’s Graduate Admissions Board.
Language certification - minimum requirement B2 for B.Sc. Degrees.

Upon completion of the traineeship, students are required to submit to the competent office the following documentation:
